Congratulations on your assignment to Fort Bliss - home of the only armored division in the United States Army. Fort Bliss hosts a lethal combination of Infantry, Armor and Artillery capabilities. The 1st Armored Division includes the Ready First, Iron, Bulldog, Highlander, Iron Eagles, 212th Fires, and 15th Sustainment Brigades. Other commands on Fort Bliss include the Brigade Modernization Command, the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command with the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, William Beaumont Army Medical Center, and Joint Task Force - North. In addition, the 5th Armored Brigade, the 402d Field Artillery Brigade, and the Directorate of Mobilization trains and readies units deploying worldwide.

Fort Bliss also proudly offers the highest standard of living of any installation in the Department of Defense. Fort Bliss boasts "Freedom Crossing", a first-of-its-kind outdoor shopping mall hosts traditional AAFES facilities alongside civilian retail outlets in a half-million square foot shopping center. We have seven gyms to help keep Soldiers and their families fit, including the new Soto Physical Fitness Center, and 10 swimming pools, including three at the new indoor Aquatic Training Center. Soldiers assigned to barracks will find newly-constructed, well-equipped modern facilities. Each brigade is housed in a campus which includes completely new headquarters, maintenance and barracks buildings. For Soldiers with families, Fort Bliss has constructed more than 1,800 new homes spread across 11 communities. These 2-story quadplexes have spacious designs, with 1750 square-foot 3-bedroom units and 1850 square foot for 4-bedroom units.

Just outside Fort Bliss' gates is the Sun City. El Paso is a thriving big city of more than 800,000, with a great history and a tremendous spirit. From nature to nightlife, there is something for everyone in El Paso. A true melting pot of American and southwestern culture, the combination is noticeable everywhere.

El Paso area schools perform higher than 70 percent of the school districts adjoining large Army posts all around the country and higher than most schools in America.

El Paso schools provide specialized magnet programs designed to meet specific needs and career goals of their students. All districts offer an early-college high school program which is specifically designed to provide students with a rigorous course of study. Meanwhile, our teachers, liaisons, counselors and district administrators participate in Fort Bliss' annual professional development programs designed to enhance their awareness of the unique aspects of military life, transitions, and deployments. Strong and sustained relationships between Fort Bliss and area school districts make Fort Bliss a great place to raise a family.

Fort Bliss is home to the largest training area in the United States - larger than the National Training Center on Fort Irwin, the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk and all of the training areas of Fort Hood and Fort Riley combined. Because of its mountainous desert terrain, Fort Bliss makes a perfect training location for units deploying to the Middle East. Spread across 1.2 million acres of desert, are 29 villages and towns. Nine of them feature theater-specific architecture, and cutting-edge technology generating realistic battlefield conditions.

The training area also boasts 58 live-fire ranges, 1,700 miles of tank trails, three base camps and rail-head facilities. Overhead, the 343 million cubic acres of airspace allow training on every weapons platform in America's arsenal. From pistol to missile, from individual tasks to company formations, you can do it all here on the Fort Bliss training area.

The TRIAD, consisting of Fort Bliss, Holloman Air Force Base, and White Sands Missile Range and teamed with El Paso and Southern New Mexico is a joint military and inter-agency training powerhouse. This partnership allows us to conduct joint, integrated fires. We can call in Close Air Support

with our own Combat Aviation Brigade. We can train on air-to-ground integration with the Air Force. Next year, our Digital Air Ground Integration Range, specifically designed for this kind of live fire, will be fully developed. Most installations have to send their units to the National Training Center for this kind of joint, integrating training, but we have it all right here on Fort Bliss!

Clearly, you are now part of a prestigious installation with a rich history. Your sponsor will be in contact with you within the next few days to start the process of bringing you into what I am convinced will be one of the best experiences in your military career.

If my staff or I can assist, please contact my hotline at (915) 744-IRON. Join us on Facebook at facebook.com/army.bliss.

Serving the Nation!

- Major General Robert White
1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss Commander
