COL John M. Cushing

COL John M. Cushing was commissioned as an Armor Officer upon graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1993. As an Armor Officer, COL Cushing served in multiple tactical assignments in the 3rd Infantry Division, the 1st Cavalry Division, and now the 1st Armored Division. His other assignments include teaching Systems Engineering at the United States Military Academy and serving as the Armor Branch Chief at the Human Resources Command.

COL Cushing served in the 1st Cavalry Division as a Platoon Leader, Support Platoon Leader, Squadron Commander and G3 while in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Resolute Support. As a member of the 3rd Infantry Division, COL Cushing served as a Tank Company Commander and Recon Troop Commander with the 2nd Brigade at Fort Stewart and as a Battalion S3 and Brigade Executive Officer for the 3rd Brigade at Fort Benning. Prior to joining the 1st Armored Division, COL Cushing commanded the 194th Armored Brigade at Fort Benning, Georgia. His first assignment with the Division was as the Deputy Commanding Officer of Sustainment for Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. He currently serves as the Chief of Staff for 1st Armored Division. COL Cushing’s combat tours include both Iraq and Afghanistan.

COL Cushing holds a master’s degree from both the University of Virginia and the Army War College. He is also a graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College. His awards include the Bronze Star (3 Oak Leaf Clusters) and the Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC). He has also earned the Combat Action Badge, the Airborne Badge, the Air Assault Badge, and the Ranger Tab.
